About Valmeinier - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Valmeinier - three small valleys, big fun!
The charming ski resort Valmeinier lies, easily accessible, amid the National Parks of Ecrins and Vanoise. The mountain pass road from Valloire to Col du Galibier is legendary as the highest alpine pass in the Tour de France. Valmeinier 1500 is a picturesque mountain village with old, traditional stone houses. Valmeinier 1800 is, in comparison, a young ski station built to fit into the surrounding mountain landscape. The chalets, furnished in wood, are grouped in a horseshoe-shape around the valley station, so that you can reach the sun terraces of the cosy cafes on skis. You'll also find numerous restaurants, bars, shops and 3 cinemas, all just a few metres away!
SkiWith the lift pass "Galibier Thabor" you have the choice between 31 lifts and 88 pistes with a total length of 150 km. The ski resorts Valmeinier 1500, Valmeinier 1800 and Valloire comprise the fifth-largest ski region in Savoy (lift pass distribution only in Valmeinier).
Endless snowy slopes with dreamy pistes for carving and skiing spread out above the mountain village of Valmeinier at Les Gros Crey. The largely undeveloped slopes on the opposite side offer fantastic opportunities for deep-snow skiing. Snowboarders will find a daily-prepared snow park with a half-pipe and a boardercross section at Crey du Quart near Valloire. If you just can't part from your skis for the day, you can enjoy some night skiing at Valmeinier 1800. The ski region's altitude (70% lie above 2,000 m) and 400 snow-making machines ensure the highest degree of snow-reliability.
Looking for even more variety? Orelle, located just 18 km from Valmeiner, offers the perfect entry to the Val Thorens ski region, the centre of Les 3 Vallées. This day trip to the largest ski region in the world should not be passed up!
Valmeinier is a tranquil village where quality is valued more highly than quantity. The cosy mountain huts are therefore somewhat smaller than elsewhere, and rather than goulash you will be served delicious regional dishes. The numerous sun terraces and cafes will invite you in for après ski after a day of skiing, and in the evening you will have a choice of diverse bars, restaurants, cinemas and a disco.
Additionally, there is an open air ice rink and you can explore nature on numerous hiking paths around the villages in your winter boots or - during a guided tour - on snow shoes. Further off piste leisure activities include a bowling alley, a tobogganing run, or ice-fall climbing. And for all those who can't get enough of skiing during the day, can also go night skiing twice a week (depends on season).
There are 10 km of cross-country skiing runs surrounding Valmeinier and Valloire. Just above Valloire runs a lovely trail through a slightly ascending valley to a small airport. Another trail starts at the other end of Valloire and runs, sometimes ascending, in the direction of Valmeinier to Les 3 Croix. The area might not be huge but you will be fascinated by its beauty!
