Avoriaz - perfect winter fun!
The small resort of Avoriaz is located at an altitude of 1,800 m and is on the French side of Les Portes du Soleil's ski region. The completely traffic-free settlement was built on a former alpine pasture in 1960; here cars are replaced by horse-drawn carriages. The architecture, as well as the resort's modern design, fit perfectly into the surrounding area and also create a very cosy atmosphere. Its elevated location lends to a climatic advantage, mainly that there is plenty of snow and sun. A big plus is that the pistes are easy and quick to reach, as you can access the ski area from almost every apartment straight away - after a short descent through the heart of the village. From the modern valley station you can reach the wide pistes, which promise enjoyable descents and ultimate fun.
Also , the new water park "AQUARIAZ", which is one of the biggest and highest in the world has been opened. It offers areas for all age groups, e.g. jacuzzi, a half-pipe slide , a climbing wall over the water and much more! The park does not only amaze you by its unique plant world and mountain scenery, but also through its sustainability. In addition, Aquariaz has a comprehensive evening and night-time programme, so that alongside families, young skiers get their money’s worth in various pubs, bars or discos.
SkiWith the lift pass "Avoriaz" you will find 75 km of piste and 34 lift available, between 960 and 2,460 m altitude. From nearly every accommodation you have direct access into the ski area. The highly modern gondola provides a quick and comfortable ride from Vallée des Prodains to Avoriaz.
Avoriaz offers not only the highest amount of, but also the most diverse runs in the region! The wide and easy pistes are perfect for beginners and families; sportingly adept skiers get their money's worth on the "Crozats": with 4 km in length and 1,000 m in altitude drop, this is one of the steepest runs in the whole ski region. The legendary "Mur Suisse" (the Suisse Wall) is located in close proximity, which is known to be one of the steepest mogul pistes in the world. Directly in the centre of Avoriaz the little ones will find entertainment in the kid's area.
With the lift pass "Les Portes du Soleil" you have access to 580 km of piste, open to you via the connection from Avoriaz itself, or from the Swiss resorts Torgon and Morgins (see ski region).
Avoriaz is the liveliest resort in Portes du Soleil and does not have to hide behind Austria with regards to apres ski in any way! Numerous huts are available already in the ski area and provide a sociable atmosphere and many tasty snacks, such as Tartiflette, and of course hot drinks. Even after the lifts have closed for the day, Avoriaz's bars and discos are full of liveliness and fun! Popular places for night-owls to go are, for instance the pub "le Choucas", the "La Cabane" or the discos "le Festival" and "La Fantastique".
A quiet evening can be spent in the cinema or in the many restaurants where you can spoil your taste buds with great Savoyard specialities, such as raclette or fondue. As an alternative to a day on the piste, Avoriaz has quite a selection of offers available to pass the time: from air-boarding, kite flying or skidoo tours, via more "cosy" activities, such as tobogganing, ice skating or horse-drawn sleigh rides, even Segway tours.
Further you will find the activity water park "AQUARIAZ" spaced out over 2,400 m². Various pools, jacuzzi, a half-pipe slide and a small river ensure loads of fun. Avoriaz is surely no place to be bored!
Les Portes du Soleil is not just amazing for fans of alpine sports, but also for cross-country skiers too! 194 kilometres of cross-country piste and more skating cross-country trails are waiting to be discovered. Due to its high altitude, whereby most of the pistes lie above 1,000 m, and the gentle nature of the pre-alps, the conditions for cross-country skiing are near on perfection! The majority of the trails run on the French side. Sometimes there is a cross-country trail fee or at least for the mountain or valley ascent.
Besides 97 km of trails in Morzine, Avoriaz offers the largest cross-country selection with a total of 40 km of piste. Many of the routes run past the trees or through the thick spruce forest, which is definitely an experience. The cross-country trail at high altitude “Le Proclou” (1,600 – 1,800 m) offers an impressive panoramic view, as well as high levels of snow. Be warned though, it is 7 km long and will test your stamina. More experienced cross-country skiers should test out the 12 km long “Croix des Combes” without a doubt. This is one of the longest and most challenging trails in the ski region.
