It is the third largest city in all of Normandy after Le Havre and Rouen and the third largest city in Normandy after Rouen and Le Havre. The metropolitan area of Caen, in turn, is the second largest in Normandy after that of Rouen, the 21st largest in France.
It is located 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) inland from the English Channel, 200 kilometers northwest of Paris and connected to the south of England by the Caen- (Ouistreham) -Portsmouth ferry route. Caen is located in the center of its northern region and is a center of political, economic and cultural power. Located a few miles from the coast, landing beaches, lively resorts in Deauville and Cabourg, Norman Switzerland and Pays d'Auge, Caen is often considered the archetype of Normandy.
Caen is known for its historic buildings built during the reign of William the Conqueror, who was buried there and for the Battle for Caen - heavy fights that took place in and around Caen during the Battle of Normandy in 1944, destroying a large part of the city. The city has now kept its memory by erecting a memorial and a museum dedicated to peace, the Caen Memorial. Caen has an oceanic climate which is somewhat improved due to its slightly inland position. Despite this, summers are still cool by French standards, and the climate is maritime in terms of high rainfall, relatively modest sun hours and mild winters.
In the past, Caen had a guided bus system - built by Bombardier Transportation and modeled on its light transport guidance technology. In the face of residents' anger at the project, the municipality had to follow the project with only 23% of the population in favor of [citation needed] for the new form of transport. The layout of the city center road has been profoundly transformed [citation], and the problems of the former without traffic jams are still unresolved [citation needed]. The system was shut down in 2017 to make room for a new tram network, which will open in 2019.
