Colmar (originally named Colombarium then Kolmar) is a city in eastern France, the prefecture of the Haut-Rhin department in the Alsace region.
Colmar is located 64 km south - west of Strasbourg, lauch River in eastern Vosges Mountains.
It was founded in the ninth century and is famous for its old town, well preserved and numerous architectural landmarks and museums.
Colmar secular and religious landmarks reflect the eight centuries of French and German architecture, adapted to local customs and construction materials.
Largely spared the destruction of the French Revolution and the wars in 1870-1871, 1914-1918 and 1939-1945, Colmar is well preserved old town and famous among tourists. The area crossed by river channels Launch and originally hosted neighborhood butchers, tanners and merchants than it is now called "Little Venice" (la Petite Venise). Colmar's urban landscape was the inspiration for the Japanese animated film "Howl's Castle walking"
Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi was born here, sculptor and author of the Statue of Liberty in New York. To celebrate 100 years since its rise in America in Colmar was installed a copy of the Statue of Liberty in New York, 12 meters high
Every year since 1947, Colmar is the home of what today is considered to be the largest trade event and the most important festival in Alsace, Alsatian Wine Festival (Foire aux Vins d'Alsace).
