About La Joue du Loup - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
La Joue du Loup - small, but nice!
La Joue du Loup in English translates to "the wolf's cheek". However, this cosy location in the south west of the Départements Hautes-Alpes is everything but raw and wild. The still-young ski village is a snowy and well-maintained station in the heart of the Seealpen, around 95 km away from Grenoble, and stands for comfort and family-friendly ski fun! While castles are nowhere to be found, a lot more awaits in this little location, with its cosy chalets traditionally constructed of wood- hence the charming nickname, the "Village of Wood".
Despite its humble size, La Joue du Loup is certainly not to be overlooked. In the lively village centre, you can find shops, restaurants and cafes waiting to be strolled by, sauntered into, and feasted in. Due to the size of the location, you can go exclusively a short distance to the lifts, shops, and dining opportunities. Diverse leisure activities, such as snowshoe hiking, dog- or horse-sledding, or even movie theatre nights provide plenty of variety besides the pistes. The way to the ski area SuperDévoluy lies right in the area.
SkiWith the "La Joue du Loup & SuperDévoluy" lift pass, you can ski a total 100 km of pistes in the SuperDévoluy & La Joue du Loup ski area. The diverse area is one of the biggest in the Maritime Alps, and links the ski villages of SuperDévoluy and La Joue du Loup together. In the extensive ski are, you have the chance to use 23 lifts, which cover over 1,000 m in height difference. In the family-friendly areal, kids and beginners ski near the valley station on the ski school's flat practice slopes, along with practice lifts and a magic carpet.
With the "Telemix" lift, a lift with chairs and gondolas, you can reach the sunny slopes on the flanks of Le-Pierra (2,500 m), with its wide, blue pistes. In the higher elevations, predominantly red pistes, with their shady, rocky starts, await practised skiers. Below the summit plateaus run the steepest pistes in the area, rightly labelled at the black level. With the 6 person, high-speed "Le Sommarel" chair lift, you can race up to the highest locations in the ski area. In the summit region, the pistes, with their many promising names like "Le Mur" (The wall), are more sophisticated. Free riders can also find on the Combe Ratin or the Tête de Cluse superb skiing possibilities.
Interesting for parents: The ski area holds the label "Famille Plus Montagne," which is shown through the family-friendly infrastructure. Small children starting at 15 months old can be cared for in the nursery or ski kindergarten for half-days or full-days, and parents have the ability to rent equipment on location, such as children's beds and strollers. For more fun next to the pistes, there is also a toboggan piste, as well as a playground to enjoy.
La Joue du Loup offers numerous ways to end your day of skiing, whether cosy or sporty. For example, enjoy a cosy movie night in "La Tanière" with crisp popcorn and a refreshing coke, dine on French delicacies in various restaurants or enjoy an evening snow shoe hiking through crunching snow.
If you prefer a more action-packed evening, you can use snow scooters on various routes with varying levels of difficulty through lovely landscapes. A ride on the snake toboggan is also great fun. This enables a number of people to sit behind each other on one toboggan and ride down the slope together.
Party lovers will also find what they are looking for here: in cosy pubs or in the disco, you can bring the evening to an entertaining end. More variety can also be found in neighbouring resort SuperDévoluy.
SuperDévoluy and La Joue du Loup offer a total of over 35 km of cross country tracks. Together with the Col du Festre, the whole region boasts a total of 80 km of prepared track, covering all difficulty levels.
The Plateau de Boucherac, on the outskirts of SuperDévoluy is particularly suited for beginners. The trails in Bois de Chagier, La Joue du Loup are extremely appealing for the more experienced, but are also beginners will find them manageable. A connection to SuperDévoluy and to the Col du Festre is available.
The longest trail is the "Traversée du Dévoluy" which, not only due to its length, is very challenging and really recommended to the more experienced and well-conditioned cross-country skiers! The 6 km long high-altitude (1,850 m) "Le circuit du pré de renard" is however also suitable for less experienced skiers.
