About La Plagne - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
La Plagne – skiing fit for the gods!
The construction of La Plagne (Eng.: Alpine Meadows) as a ski region first began in 1960, between the Valley Isere and the 3,400 high Dome de Bellecote. Just one year later, the first lifts began working and in the course of the year the artificial villages were created around Plagne Centre. Later the designers rather wanted to create a cosy atmosphere and turned towards the chalet style to create their buildings, and so besides the large concrete living blocks, La Plange also offers quaint apartment complexes now. Today there are various stations, each with a different appearance. This is best observed in the evening in the cosy restaurants, as they begin to serve the local savoury dishes, and in La Plagne Centre where the party scene comes into swing. The ten stations are connected throughout the day until 1:00 am through a complimentary shuttle bus, and occasionally with gondolas. .
The resorts special charm and its diversity make the French resort especially interesting skiers travelling in groups. Everybody who is hungry for party and action will find ideal conditions in La Plange to end the day with the right music and a little alcohol. Numerous bars, discos and the casino give you space to party until the sun goes up. When travelling in groups, the many winter hiking routes are also popular, caring for a sporty après ski experience. Groups and couples can relax in spa facilities which are of course also available in La Plagne.
SkiWith the lift pass "Domaine La Plagne", you can discover 127 pistes with a total length of 225 km and 94 lifts ranging between 1,207 and 3,250 m. All major ski slopes from the main four peaks of Roche de Mio (2,700 m), La Grande Rochette (2,505 m), Les Verdons (2,500 m) and Le Biolley (2,350 m) end in the semicircular bowl of La Plagne. Any spot in the ski area can be reached from any of the ski centres!
The undisputed highlight is the 15 km long descent from the Bellecôte-Glacier to Montchavin at phenomenal altitudes over 2,000 m. The 2-persons chairlift "Traversée" that has been working for 35 years, has now been replaced by a 4-persons chairlift that will take you safely to the demanding runs at the Bellecôte. The snowboard areas with halfpipes, boardercross and other extras round off La Plagne's fantastic offer. In La Plagne, you can even find Europe's longest fun slope!
For beginners, at every station there are level slopes; the tree-free slopes at Belle Plagne are especially good for a first attempt. The entry into the ski area has been switched to the centre of La Plagne: A beginners area and a new green piste have been created and the 4-persons chairlift "Bécoin" has been replaced by a 6-persons lift.
The deep powder snow areas promise an absolute highlight for off-piste fans. Especially the Face Nord, the north facing side of the Bellcôte glacier, is highly attractive for experienced free riders, however should only be explored with ski guides.
With the upgraded "Paradiski Illimité" lift pass (payable locally), you have daily access to Les Arcs' and La Plagne's total 425 kilometres of piste, which are connected by the modern “Vanoise Express”. Furthermore, with the 6 days lift pass "Paradiski Illimité" you can make use of even more delights, such as
a half day skiing on the afternoon of your arrival day, one free entry at the Village Igloo Arc 2000 ice cave and much more (see info on site).
For some, the party only starts when the sun has set! All those guests looking for après ski fun are well-catered for, with countless bars and clubs inviting you to come in to party and flirt. The whole area offers various bars and restaurants waiting for party-goers. Popular meeting points in Belle Plagne are "Cheyenne" and "La Tête Inn". Also the "Spitting Feathers Ski Bar" at Plagne Bellecote is English owned and very popular with its live sport and regular Happy Hours.
Those who prefer something a bit quieter can experience the exquisite cuisine in the local restaurants. Local specialities are also offered in the mountain station lodges. The complimentary shuttle bus between the stations is in operation until midnight and free of charge. Also during the day La Plagne provides diverse entertainment with a wide variety of offers: helicopter flying, ice climbing on the artificial ice tower or on the frozen waterfalls, a velocity rush on the snow scooter or in the ice canal (originating from the Olympic Winter Games in 1992) - in La Plagne your imagination can run riot! Quieter activities as snowshoe and winter hikes, ice skating or an enjoyable ride with the dog sledges are also possible.
The area surrounding La Plagne boasts 65 km of cross-country trails. The tours of the separate districts are ideal for beginners. The 30 km long cross-country trails Champagny-le-Haut in the Nordic centre, which have easy to intermediate slopes, are particularly recommendable for conditioned skiers. Also, they offer a beautiful view on the Grand Casse in the La Vanoise national park. You will have no problems getting there by bus. The neighbouring resort of Les Arcs offers a further 15 km of cross-country trails, including two 5 km long cross-country trail at altitude near Les Arcs 1800 and Les Arc 2000.
