One of the most important historical cities of Normandy, Rouen remained in history mainly because of Joan of Arc, but also because stories about this place. Capital Norse warriors who came here on the river Seine in the ninth century, the city grew rapidly in the following centuries, and in the Middle Ages was one of the most powerful and feared Norman fortress. It was one of the capitals of the Anglo-Norman dynasty, who led both England and much of modern France from the eleventh century and the fourteenth century.
In April 1944 the Allies had bombed and destroyed half of Rouen, in particular the industrial suburbs. Fortunately, much of the historical area has remained intact, which is why Gothic cathedral painted by Monet can be admired today.
Today, Rouen is a city that combines old and new, a place with many museums and historical monuments worth visiting in silence.
Especially downtown Rouen is interesting, very well keeping more wooden buildings, cobbled streets that guard. The oldest part is fascinating for its monuments: the cathedral, clock, Old Square, Church of Saint-Maclou, Saint-Ouen Abbey and many others. Art enthusiasts should visit the museums here, especially for Impressionist art collections.
