Val d'Isère – ski on world-famous racing pistes!
Ever since the alpine competitions of Olympic games in 1992, Val d'Isère, along with its neighbour Tignes, belongs to the top French winter sport resorts. The village features a historic centre dating back to the 16th century, and has kept its Savoyard charm right up until today. The newer buildings have also been built using natural materials such as wood and stone. The village has been a skiing village since 1934, when a few ski pioneers started a ski school and built a ski lift. Since then the resort has developed further. For 50 years now, the charming and welcoming winter sports resort introduces the annual winter season with first-class alpine racers speeding down the hills. The village centre has very little car traffic and a great infrastructure with many cafés, restaurants, shops and hotels, which offer the ideal atmosphere for a winter holiday.
SkiIn Val d'Isère, home of the three-time Olympic champion Jean-Claude Killy, you can enter the huge ski area, named after the famous athlete. The lift pass "Espace Killy" (see ski region) offers 300 kilometres of ski enjoyment from 1,550 – 3,456 m as well as two first-class summer ski areas and - new for this winter - a few other specials.
On the “La Grande Motte” glacier near Tignes and on the "Pointe du Montet" glacier near Val d’Isere, there are optimum ski conditions even from June to September. And ff that is not enough for you, there are even more ski areas to enjoy. Furthermore, the 6-day ski pass gives you a one-day-access to the Paradiski and the 3 Vallées ski areas, as well as a special offer for a 1-day ski pass to the Espace San Bernardo and the Ste Foy Tarentaise areas. For those who only want to stay in the ski area of Val d'Isere, 150 km of pistes and 42 modern lifts are available.
For snowboarders and freeriders there are various snow parks in the entire "Espace Killy" with a half-pipe at the valley station in Tignes (see snow park) and directly above is the huge free ride zone "Le Spot" with, among other things, boardercross. Standing at the lower base, one can see the peak of the Grande Motte glacier (3,656 m) and its steep pistes. Experts will love the “La Face de Bellevard” run in the area around Val d'Isère: the difficult piste runs 2.4 km and descends over 913 m! The slopes on Tovière, descending from the Col de Fresse down to La Daille as well as the "Santons-run" towards the resort centre are the more leisurely runs.
With its restaurants, bars, pubs, clubs and cafés as well as all the other offers a winter sports fan may need, Val d'Isère is well equipped for great aprés ski. The parties begin even before the lifts make the day's last run, and often extend long into the night. One can begin the evening with a drink in the "Boubou Bar" or in the modern "Cafe Face". If you are not falling into bed after that, you can continue the party in clubs such as the "Le Graal" or "Dicks Tea Bar" until well into the morning hours. Those who are looking for "off-mountain" sport opportunities will enjoy the ice rink or the sports hall, which includes a climbing wall and various sports courts. A highlight for families and children is the 1 km long toboggan run at the Savonette lift.
Val d'Isère and neighbouring Tignes boast 44 km of cross country ski trails. Both include trails for dogs, and also offer trails for skate skiing. Val d'Isère also has a high-altitude track, the Lac de l'Ouillette, at 2,560 m. For accessing the 3 km long round track a lift ticket is necessary, an investment worth to be made – even for the less experienced skiers! More challenging however is the 6.5 km long "Manchet" (1,850 m).
