About Val Thorens - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Val Thorens - unlimited ski & après ski!
At an altitude of 2,300 m above sea level, Val Thorens is the highest ski resort in Europe. The village itself is practically located "on the piste", allowing you to simply ride through the centre of the resort. Due to its great snow record, skiing up until May is rarely a problem. The greatest meeting point for well-deserved après-ski is the large sun terrace in front of the legendary bar "Le Monde". Val Thorens has much to offer its international clientele, a multitude of great restaurants, bars and cafés, as well as numerous shops, boutiques and shopping arcades are just waiting to be explored.
The resort's sport centre offers you the chance to engage in further sporting activities - including tennis or squash - or relaxing in the pool, sauna or jacuzzi. Also the bowling centre offers every sports fan interesting possibilities to let off steam. Or how about trying out a tour on the snow scooter?
SkiWith the lift pass "Val Thorens-Orelle" you have access to 150 km of the loveliest and most snow-sure pistes in "Les 3 Vallées". 29 lifts guarantee a quick ascent - especially the large gondola at the Cime de Caron (3,200 m). The magnificent view and the descent along the pistes are definitely an experience of a kind in this region - just breathtaking! Two lifts, the "Plan de l'Eau" and "Portette" now offer space for 6 persons and take you up to the summit comfortably.
A further highlight is the snow park, which opened in 2007 and expands over 70,000 m²! Additionally there is a 1.4 km long boardercross trail with jumping table, which is ideal for really powering out. The numerous deep powder snow areas make all free rider's hearts beat faster! The well-exercised can try out the 12 km long "Col de l'Audzin" with an altitude difference of 1,400 m, while pros can really get going on the black piste "Combe de Caron" (6 km long). For experienced and good skiers we recommend the lift pass "Les 3 Vallées". Those who book the lift pass "Val Thorens" have the possibility to upgrade their pass in resort (for a surcharge) to the "Les 3 Vallées".
In most lifts and in many mountain railway stations and restaurants in the ski area, you have access to Wi-Fi hotspots.
Val Thorens has revealed itself in recent years as the "Mecca" of French après ski. With 20 bars and three discos in the area, Val Thorens truly offers something to satisfy every taste. Top tip: the most popular après ski bar in town, with international character, is "Le Monde"! When the sun goes down, the party shifts from the large terrace to the pub, or the cosy bar in the basement. When the clock strikes twelve, the party animals head out to the beloved disco "Malaysia".
Another highlight is the possibly highest located open air club in Europe - "La Folie Douce" in Val Thorens. The award-winning club can be found on an altitude of 2,600 m at the mountain station of the Pionniers gondola and the 6-person chair lift Plein Sud. The approx. 700 m² large dance and party area reminds of spring break in Florida and parties in Ibiza, and offers live performances and musicians (funky-soul-house.)
Those who seek even more sporting opportunities after a day of skiing will find a great selection in the sports centre. Here there are three tennis courts, two squash courts, an indoor pool, sauna and jacuzzi, as well as a fitness room and a massage room. For children there is a fun park with trampolines, bouncy castles, ball pits and much more. Or what about a ride on the highest toboggan run in the world - "Le Toboggan"? Overcome 700 m altitude in only 30 min - a fantastic experience!
Cross country in the 3 Vallées? No problem! Even though there are only approx. 4 km of cross-country trails in Val Thorens, in the whole region there are but around 119 km of trails available.
28 km of trails run past Les Menuires at an altitude ranging from 1,450 m to 1.850 m and are predominantly suited to more able skiers. The trails are situated in the Belleville Valley and offer impressive views of the surrounding mountains.
Courchevel boasts a whole 66 km of cross-country trails and is, for this reason, of most interest to cross-country fans. The 2.5 km long trail “Col de la Loze” at analtitude of up to 2300 m is spectacular and runs up to 2,300 m.
With a length of 17 km and a higher level of difficulty, Courchevel’s longest trail, which leads to Méribel Altiport, shines above the rest. The longest trail in Les Menuires will challenge even the most advanced of skiers: the “Le Doron” at an altitude of 1,400 – 1,650 m over a distance of 21 km!
