About Vannes - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Vannes (Breton: Gwened) is a town in the department of Morbihan in the region of Brittany in northwest France. The city was founded more than 2000 years.
Vannes Morbihan Gulf is located at the mouth of two rivers, and Vincin Marle. The city is at a distance of about 100 km north-west of Nantes, 450 km south-west of Paris.
Vannes name comes from Venice, a maritime Celtic people who lived in Armor (now Brittany) before the Roman invasion. Venice's fleet was defeated by Julius Caesar in 56 BC, the LOCMARIAQUER, as a consequence of Venice were all either slaughtered or sold as slaves. The Romans established a town called Darioritum (Roman name of Vannes), in the location that previously belonged to this population.
Vannes is a neat town with a medieval center small (surprisingly small, considering the size of the town that developed around the old walls), and a lively student atmosphere due to a department of the University of Rennes, located here.
Vannes offers a wide range of hotels, varying in style and price. As a rule inside the city walls are much higher rates. The same rule applies to restaurants in Vannes. There are some restaurants on Rue des Halles, with lunch and dinner menus, attractive price, or port, but they are inevitably more expensive.
Not to be missed, "Place Henri-IV", considered to be the most beautiful part of the old town, offering panoramic views of narrow streets, lined by houses, the building of the fourteenth century "La Cohue" which was the market, theater and prison during its existence, the Aquarium "Parc du Golfe", home to the Nile crocodile found in Paris in 1984 channels and fish without eyes in Mexico.
