About Vaujany - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Vaujany - perfect combination of fun on the piste and French cosiness!
Hardly any other resort in the Alps combines tradition and modernity so well as Vaujany does. Located on the mountain side, the family-friendly village provides traditional alpine charm with its crooked alleys and streets. In the past the locals used to depend on the regional farming products, however since the last war this has changed drastically. Vaujany now belongs to one of the wealthiest districts in France thanks to a large dam lake in the valley which operates a hydroelectric power plant.
By installing one of the most modern gondolas in France, Vaujany is now perfectly connected to the renowned ski area of Alpe d'Huez and therefore has become very popular with winter sports enthusiasts. If you are also looking for entertainment aside the piste then you will surely be happy with the spa pool complex or on the newly opened ice rink (58 x 28 m) with large visitor's stand and the new bowling alley. Vaujany offers its guests a free parking garage. To save tired legs the ascent to the accommodation there are escalators which operate between the various levels of the village. Numerous restaurants, pizzerias and some bars round off the village's tourist offers.
SkiWith the "Grand Domaine Ski" lift pass, you will have access to the ski area of Alpe d'Huez, most of which faces south-southwest, allowing for plenty of sunshine. When heading out from Vaujany, you can reach the pistes in just a few minutes thanks to the modern Vaujany-Alpette and Vaujany-Villette gondolas. The ski area (1,125 - 3,330 m), with its 250 km of piste and 67 lifts, counts as especially snow-sure: 80% of the pistes lie above 1,800 m altitude!
The most spectacular piste, the "La Sarenne", starts up on the Sarenne Glacier and runs along the front side of the Pic Blanc and down into the valley. With a length of 16 km, it is one of the longest pistes in Europe! The 3 km long, black, steep run "Le Tunnel" is only suitable for expert skiers, taking riders from the Pic Blanc through a tunnel and out onto a mogul piste. The red pistes up on the "Dôme des Petits Rousses" are not as tricky, but are still rarther demanding. The "Bartavelles" run in particular provides not only usually good snow conditions, but also breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes and neighbouring valleys, along with impressive rock faces. Beginners will find the perfect practice slopes at the resort edge of Alpe d'Huez and Vaujany. Snowboarders are also well tended to here: The fun park at the Le Lac Blanc chair lift is only for real experts. The second fun park, on the other hand, is much more beginner-friendly. In Vaujany, a beginner snow park can also be found.
For the 2016/2017, the "Signal" was transformed into a combination lift composed of 10-person gondolas and 8-person chair lifts, thus transporting up to 3,370 winter sports fans per hour.
With your lift pass, you also have the chance to use both the pool and the ice skating rink in Vaujany one time each. From 22/12/2018 - 05/04/2019, when booking a 6-day lift pass or more, you will also have access to the ski areas of the Grande Galaxie: ski for two days in the Les 2 Alpes ski area (225 km) and one day each in Serre Chevalier (250 km), Puy St. Vincent (75 km) and in the ski areas around Sestrière and Montgenèvre of the Via Lattea (Italy, 400 km). To visit both ski areas of the Via Lattea, please be sure to pick up a receipt from the lift office when presenting your lift pass. In order to make use if th last two ski areas, please present your lift pass at the lift office and pick up a receipt.
In Vaujany relaxation after a long day on the piste is best found in the activity pool complex "Espace Loisirs" with its slides, sauna, spa, steam baths and fitness centre. There is also an ice rink available where once a week there is an ice disco to attend. Besides numerous restaurants there are also some bars which offer party possibilities into the morning hours. In Alpe d'Huez (approx. 25 km away) there are a few discos, as well as several bars and cafés which ensure a varied nightlife. Wild parties can be had in bars such as the "Smithy's Tavern", where live bands regularly play. For a good dance the best place to go is the hip night club "L'Igloo".
The vast number of activities such as skidooing, snow-shoeing and winter hiking, tobogganing or various indoor sports in the Palais des Sports in Alpe d'Huez ensure even "piste free" days are fun! A good tip for all those seeking action is climbing on the 200 m high climbing wall Gorges de Sarenne - ideal for all those looking for an adrenalin buzz. For shopping-fans, there are also diverse shops available in the resort that make for an inviting place to wander about in the afternoons. If you would like to learn around Vaujany's landscape and history, you can visit the museums in resort. The "Maison de la Faune" or the "L'Espace Patrimoine" display interesting information and offer diverse activities.
Surrounding Alpe d'Huez you will find 50 kilometres of cross-country trails for varying abilities. Particularly beautiful is the panoramic trail over Poutran to l'Alpette at an altitude of 2,100 m. The track leads past several mountain lakes through beautiful winter scenery! Ambitious skiers will enjoy the "Boucle des Lacs" run: the longest trail in the area (20 km) goes up to an altitude of 2,100 m and is a real challenge!
