Versailles is a city in France, Yvelines department prefecture in Ile-de-France region, south-west of Paris.
The city was built in desire Versailles King Louis XIV with the construction of Versailles Palace, his residence. For this reason the city has a rational and symmetrical grid of streets. In eighteenth-century standards, Versailles was a very modern European
city and was used as a model for the design of Washington DC by Pierre Charles Junior.
Versailles was the kingdom's de facto capital of France, from 1682 until 1789. Today is a rich suburb of Paris and an important legal and administrative center.
